Information

You can apply for the HST doctoral program at FEE CTU in Prague with the study branch History of Sciences and Technology.

Key prerequisite for admission to the doctoral program is completion of a master´s degree; however, applications may also be handed in by applicants whose completion of a master´s degree is duly expected. At least two months before submitting their applications, applicants should contact Prof. PhDr. Marcela Efmertová, CSc. (efmertov@fel.cvut.cz), Chair of the DSP HST SAB, to discuss their selected framework area – subject of their doctoral thesis, to select a specific tutor and gain his or her preliminary consent since a tutor´s role in a doctoral program is crucial. Applications are submitted in one of the two official terms (spring and fall) in an academic year.

Tutors are primarily SAB members, eventually other scholars – associate professors and professors, approved by the Scientific Board of FEE CTU in Prague, as proposed by SAB.

Admissions process is held in January/February and in May/June of each academic year. Details and ongoing information on the doctoral program at FEE CTU in Prague are available at:

Applicants for the doctoral program, who have received their previous education in a country other than in the Czech Republic or the Slovak Republic, are obliged to submit their application plus a certificate on the validation (nostrification) of their degree.

Doctoral program can be studied in two different models differing in the length of study:

Full-time (requiring PhD student´s regular presence at the training center) – four-year study (standard duration)

Part-time (combined) (requiring PhD student´s presence at the training center at specific times) – five-year study

During the first year of study each PhD student should get at least 10 credits.

During the first stage of study, known as the study block, PhD students broaden their knowledge in four to six specialized subjects, as prescribed by the individual study plan (hereafter ISP), approved by DSP HST SAB, devoting themselves to practice teaching and scholarly and publishing activities at their training facility. At the end of this stage, which takes two years in case of full-time study and three years in part-time module, they are obliged to:

have finished all their compulsory specialized subjects by having passed all the exams (including exam in their selected foreign language /English, French, German/ that may also take the shape of defending a specialized study)

have gained at least 23 credits (while credits are awarded only for compulsory subjects; credits are also granted for pedagogical and scientific work /at least a monthly internship abroad, grants and selected conference activities/ and for publishing). At least 7 credits should be gained for scholarly, research and publishing activities (primarily in reviewed and IF journals, independent publishing projects).

complete and successfully defend their specialized study.

PhD students shall submit a transcript of the total of 30 credits, including a minimum of 7 credits for publishing, by the time of submitting their application for the State Doctoral Exam (hereafter SDE) at the latest.

For details see the valid Studijní a zkušební řád ČVUT (CTU Study and Examination Rules).

In the follow-up phase, PhD students sit in for their SDE; those attending full-time four-year study program are obliged to pass their SDE by the end of the third year of their studies); before the exam they should submit a transcript on completed practice teaching and an internship abroad (lasting at least 1 month and held outside the Slovak Republic) in the HST branch, complete with finished project, and only then are they free to hand in their application for defense and for submitting their doctoral thesis (in the seventh year of their studies at the latest, i.e. maximum time since the start of their studies).

After defending their doctoral thesis PhD students are awarded the PhD title attached after their name.

All PhD students attending full-time DSP HST (i.e. citizens of the Czech Republic and foreigners as well) are granted scholarship, paid throughout their standard period of studies.

DSP is governed by the Universities Act, valid CTU Study and Examination Rules, and appropriate Guidelines of CTU Vice-chancellor in Prague and DSP HST SAB.
